AI CCTV for construction sites: how it works and what it costs

By Niall Dorr, founder of ImageDeep · Updated 26 October 2026

Construction sites are hard to secure. They change every week, they are full of plant, tools and materials worth stealing, and for most of the night nobody is there. AI CCTV changes what your cameras do: instead of recording for someone to review the next morning, they watch every feed live and raise an alert the moment something is wrong.

What AI CCTV detects on a construction site

  • After-hours intrusion: people or vehicles inside the hoarding outside working hours.
  • Plant and vehicle movement: an excavator or dumper moving at 2am.
  • Missing PPE: no hard hat or hi-vis in the zones you choose.
  • Falls and person-down: someone on the ground who doesn't get up.
  • Danger zones: people under a crane lift or inside a plant exclusion zone.
  • Gate ANPR: every vehicle plate read and logged at the entrance.

What happens when an alert fires

  1. Detect: the AI flags the event within seconds.
  2. Verify: a trained operator checks the clip, so your team only hears about real events.
  3. Deter: the operator speaks to the intruder live through the site speaker.
  4. Escalate: your keyholder, site manager or the police, following your plan.
  5. Record: every event is logged with the clip, ready for your insurer.

Using the cameras you already have

Scopis AI works with most IP camera brands and recorders, so there is usually nothing to rip out. On existing cameras most sites are live within 48 hours.

Sites with no power or Wi-Fi

Early-stage sites often have no mains power or broadband at the gate. HoundLight is a solar 4G unit that goes on a pole in minutes, with its own lights, siren and voice warning. Compare it with a solar security trailer.

Cost: AI monitoring vs overnight guards

A mid-sized construction site — 3 acres, €12M contract value, 18-month build — typically employs 2 overnight security guards at roughly €15–€18 per hour per guard. Factor in agency fees, holiday cover, and weekend premiums, and the real annual security payroll lands between €90,000 and €130,000. Add passive CCTV infrastructure (cameras, NVR, maintenance) and you're looking at €100,000–€150,000 per year for a system that responds to incidents after the fact.

That passive CCTV only alerts you when something has already happened. Equipment theft, PPE violations, and trespassing are discovered at the start of the next shift — often hours after the event. The footage is reviewed retrospectively and rarely leads to prosecution, and the cost of stolen plant is absorbed by the project's contingency budget.

An AI-monitored deployment for the same site — 20 cameras, perimeter coverage, tower-mounted mobile units at access points — runs at approximately €2,500–€4,500 per month depending on camera count and tier. That's €30,000–€54,000 per year. Even at the higher end, that's a 60% reduction against the traditional model before any incident cost savings are factored in.

The system monitors every camera simultaneously, 24/7. Perimeter breach, plant movement outside working hours, or PPE non-compliance triggers an alert within seconds — verified by a human operator before any action is taken. The difference isn't just cost: it's the quality of response. An AI-human system can alert a supervisor, trigger a verbal warning via site speaker, or escalate to emergency services — all within the time it takes a guard to walk from one end of the site to the other.

The ROI case for a 30-day pilot

The most common objection to switching is disruption — "we're mid-project, we can't change systems now." The reality is that AI surveillance doesn't require any existing infrastructure to be removed. It runs alongside your current setup. Most construction clients are ROI-positive within 45–60 days simply from the reduction in guard hours, before any incident cost savings are included.

Gammon Construction moved its Hong Kong sites from a guard-heavy model to human-verified AI on the cameras it already had, with real-time PPE enforcement.
